On Tuesday, outside the entrance to the Tampa Convention Center, a team from loveontrial.org offered posters to passers-by: “I wish the church was as inclusive as the military.” They’re among the many non-delegate United Methodists who have flocked to Tampa Bay for General Conference. Love on Trial promises different displays and statements each day to encourage the United Methodist Church towards “full inclusion for all, regardless of sexual orientation.”
Among their ranks is the Rev. Amy DeLong of the Wisconsin Annual Conference. Ms. DeLong faced a 20-day suspension for performing a same-sex union in 2009. She is one of the many non-delegate United Methodists who have flocked to Tampa Bay. Why? “My hope does not lie in legislation or in votes, but in showing up, being faithful and telling the truth.”
