PHILADELPHIA, Penn — Some 50 United Methodist ministers defied the United Methodist Church’s (UMC) proscriptions against participating in ceremonies celebrating same-sex unions yesterday in a service at the Arch Street UMC in Philadelphia, PA. This service was announced to be a statement of solidarity with the Rev. Frank Schaefer, who is facing a church trial next week for his action of presiding at the union of his gay son.

The United Methodist Reporter wants to encourage lively conversation about The United Methodist Church and our articles in the belief that Christian conversation (what Wesley would call conferencing) is a means of grace. While we support passionate debate, we cannot allow language that demeans or demonizes others, and we reserve the right to delete any comment we believe to be harmful or inappropriate. We encourage all to remember that we are all broken and in need of Christ's grace, and that we all see through the glass darkly until that time we when reach full perfection in love. May your speech here be tempered with love, and reflection of the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. After all, "There is no law against things like this." (Galatians 5:22-23)

2 Tim. 3:8-9 " 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone." But, then I'm just a lay person, so what do I know……

Whose law of love?

Gods Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 1 John 3:24 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him. John 14:21 Consider the statement below put forward by 70 prominent UMC pastors: “We commend the commitment of the Council of Bishops to be intentional in holding one another mutually… Read more »

Prime example of the law of love trumping unjust laws.

Love one another as I have loved you doesn't mean sexually. Love does not mean consummate, it means sacrifice. Sacrificing to honor our Creator includes not breaking His commands AND not betraying His Church as these prodigal shepherds have done.
