Recently Read: United Methodists urge families to support gay youth, stop bullying

A resolution to stop bullying of gay youth was passed at the North Alabama Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, held this week at Birmingham Southern College. AL.com & Greg Garrison reporting.

The North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church approved a resolution Tuesday calling on churches to encourage families to support gay and lesbian youth and to work with schools to prevent bullying of homosexuals.

The resolution was written by the Rev. Dave Barnhart, pastor of St. Junia United Methodist Church in Birmingham, who said that gay teens experience a high suicide rate because of a lack of acceptance by their families.

“I wanted to say, ‘Parents, don’t kick kids out of your home, don’t send them to conversion therapy,'” Barnhart said. “You don’t have to agree with your family to love them.”

Barnhart said he hopes the statement passed Tuesday, titled “Resolution Supporting Harm Reduction for LGBTQ Teens,” will encourage churches to work with schools to support understanding for gay youth.

“I would love for clergy to talk to teachers who are part of a safe zone,” Barnhart said.

While there was some discussion, the resolution passed easily after some slight amendments that were passed uninamously. It was not controversial to address the issue from that angle, Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett said. “Who is going to want anyone to be bullied?” she said.

No George, Mark is NOT saying he is agreeing with you. He politely said you are full of left-wing BS.

Where is the objective evidence that there is such a thing as a homosexual teenager?

George Nixon Shuler

What do you mean by “objective”? Sexual orientation is a status. Everyone has one. It doesn’t take a scavenger hint to find it. One may as well ask what is the objective evidence that a heterosexual teenager exists. Heterosexuality is not a default status. There is much diversity among humans.

If heterosexuality wasn’t a “default status” we wouldn’t be here.

Coitus is not a requirement for reproduction. There have been some variation of turkeybaster babies since ancient matriarchical cultures. And even if coiitus occurs it says nothing about the sexual orientations of those who have it. The 1978 movie “A Different Story” featured queer actors Meg Foster and Perry King as a lesbian and a gay man who married because he impregnanted her when they had a one night stand. Moreover, considering the numerous rapes and enslavements of conquered people including some in the Old Testament supposedly directed by “God” – remember Ghengis Khan’s immortal quote, “The three best things… Read more »

So you agree then that your assertion that we would not be here except for heterosexuality was incorrect, then?

Turkeybaster babies! But of course! George, thanks again for the enlightenment on all things sexual…you are a (self-styled) gold mine of knowledge…I will now discard my encyclopedias and query you about the important issues of the day…(Thoreau did say simplify!)

well, my friend, in other words, what you are saying is that you have no rational argument against what I’ve said, so instead you’ve decided to namecall me in frustration. Noted.

George, I don’t think I have ever encountered anyone who uses more words to make less sense than you, and then you turn around and call the other person’s assertions “laughable”.

Interesting side discussion. Due to the wackiness of our current EEO laws which have accepted the “truth is subjective, not objective” stance of the post-modernists, the matter isn’t as clear-cut as you would expect it to be. Currently, the EEO laws REQUIRE an employer to ACCEPT without question an individual’s “self-identification of race and ethnicity”. Because of this, neither the college Mrs. Dolezal works for, nor the NAACP can legally make any statement other than support for Mrs. Dolezal without opening themselves up to a lawsuit (which they would be guaranteed to lose). (See the answer to Question 13 on… Read more »

What an odd, cynical, hateful comment this is.

Kevin, it’s exactly as you described previously. For gender in general, and for race in the context of the workplace, we are encouraged to define our own reality and no one is permitted to challenge us.

I actually feel sorry for the NAACP since they would seem to have no good options available for addressing this situation.

Paul says “For gender in general, and for race in the context of the workplace, we are encouraged to define our own reality and no one is permitted to challenge us.” There are several nuances in this situation. First, no one is forbidden to say whatever whenever. You can say whatever you want. All actions, including the uttering of words, however have consequences. This is just everyday life. Secondly, just what sort of “challenging” is the writer mourning the loss of? It would appear one item he desires is to be able to give verbal opprobrium, if not more putative… Read more »

Good question It’s an Australian term for the censors, pecksniffs, prudes, comstocks, etc., obsessed with sex and wanting to punish ordinary people from having it. I like it; it’s onomotopoeic and describes the self-righteous scolds very well. The American Religious Right is certainly an aggregation of them.

If the NAACP is willing to accept BS then they have to live with the stink. The means justifies the ends when it comes to libs.

Show us the math on that one, won’t you?

it would appear some choosing to inject it into the discussion are doing so with a goal to discredit mainstream civil rights organizations, toward the false assertion that racism is over. “Thoughtful liberal”….an interesting construction but not exclusionary of conservative thought. A true “conservative” seeks to advance human rights. Of course, we in the UMC are beset upon by reactionaries in our midst, which is quite different. A true conservative would have nothing in common with reactionary elements out on the hustlings of today.

So what is the NAACP doing about black-on-black violence?

George Nixon Shuler
Guest

Depends. What are you doing about it?

Don’t believe the hype. Most of that “Black on Black Violence” is domestic violence, and we fighters against that have the opposition of the patriarchy to try and do anything about that.

The rest? Well, I believe they have a responsibility as soon as the right-wing acknowledges the Duggar spawn is a short eyes and the patriarchical system enabled his abuse of children.

And don’t forget to check out her bio at Eastern Washington University. Better hurry before they pull it down. I wonder how much of that is made up? Notice the part about being targeted eight times by Neo-Nazis from Idaho. http://www.ewu.edu/csbssw/programs/africana-studies-program/aep-faculty/rachel-dolezal
Highly entertaining.

If a decathlon champion can call himself a woman why can’t a white girl call herself black? She is trans-racial. She went to a black college, she has adopted black siblings, she teaches Africana studies whatever that is as an adjunct professor. There you go. Black. I have to wonder why she made up the stories about living in a teepee, hunting her food with a bow, adventures in Africa and who knows what else. She is the Brian Williams of the NAACP. Highly entertaining and I am sure her lib supporters will continue to support her.

considering this all stems from an extended family dispute, it cannot be said with any certainty that she “lied” about anything. In that part of the country, I do not doubt that she was targeted by the extreme right. It’s interesting our local right-wing posters feel a carte blanche to express their transphobia along with their racism here.

The NAACP said, “For 106 years, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has held a long and proud tradition of receiving support from people of all faiths, races, colors and creeds. NAACP Spokane Washington Branch President Rachel Dolezal is enduring a legal issue with her family, and we respect her privacy in this matter. One’s racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership. The NAACP Alaska-Oregon-Washington State Conference stands behind Ms. Dolezal’s advocacy record. In every corner of this country, the NAACP remains committed to securing political, educational, and economic justice for… Read more »

Hey Kevin – looks like someone hates clarity.
So this area of Washington state – Spokane and Western Washington – being just next to the Idaho Panhandle and thus by implication part of a hotbed of white supremism” – was being played by a left-winger. Are they not the victim of a series of lies?
“And here we go, blaming the victim. Despicable.”

Kevin

I have only been to Spokane once and was not paying much attention to racial harmony or disharmony. I think we are talking Eastern Washington. Puget Sound being Western Washington. I am sure we can find supremacists everywhere just as we can left-wingers.

George Nixon Shuler

I’ve not seen any left-wingers since the 1970s myself when a childhood friend of my employers was a self-identified communist.

I’ve received a myriad of anecdotal evidence here that to be a reactionary means creating one’s “truths” out of thin air, as this post did. some knowledge-deprived folks don’t understand the difference between coelatirn and causation.

On the other hand, there’s two “confirmed bachelor” Republican Senators, Lindsay Graham and Mark Kirk, dishing in the media while Graham is running for President as the last, best hope of those who want to get us into more wars, and saying he’ll have a “rotating First Lady” while his bro Kirk says “He’s a bro with no ho.” This by no means implies anything at all about other closet cases in the GOP.

YOU HAVE TO LOVE THE “LEFT-WING.” An NAACP leader and prominent civil rights activist in Washington state has been pretending to be black for years, her parents admitted local media Thursday. Rachel Dolezal, who heads Spokane’s NAACP chapter and teaches Africana studies at Eastern Washington University, refused to directly answers any questions about her alleged racial ruse after it was exposed. A KXLY reporter bluntly asked her, “Are you African American?” After a stunned pause, she replied: ““I don’t understand the question.” The question of her race “is not as easy as it seems,” Dolezal told the Spokane Spokesman-Review “We’re… Read more »

It’s come out that this all stems from a legal dispute related to her having won custody of her brother when he was underage. Interesting how racism is just part of the litany of hatred and so quickly invoked when an opportunity to bully presents itself.

Kevin

And she filed complaints about the police harassing her because she was black. As if black people don’t have enough problems without white people pretending to be black pretending to have problems. Or maybe she was just trying to “have a conversation” about race. Yeah, that’s the ticket. She was promoting a conversation.

I saw that about the Spokane woman. While we don’t know the details, it’s interesting that some think you have to be African-American to be in the NAACP because you don’t. I am white – never claimed otherwide- and I belong to it. For years actually it was dominated by whites, mostly Jews. As to the particular case, though, drawing some conclusion about the “left wing” (which is certainly not applicable in this case as the NAACP is a very conservative organization) is more than a bit of a stretch. The story describes the actions of one person, and it’s… Read more »

DW – thanks, you are right. Idahoans tend to cross the river into EASTERN Washington for alcohol and TeaParty types there go over to Idaho for detergent as the Evergreen State prohibits phospate additives.
